A Parent’s Influence

Teachers and coaches often say that once they meet a child’s parents they have a better understanding of the child’s behavior and mindset. Small acts often make a big impact on a child. How do you treat the servers at a restaurant? Do you put dishes in the dishwasher after a meal? How do you greet friends, communicate with strangers or speak to your spouse? Do you answer your phone during a meal with your children? Are your eyes on a screen rather than watching your child at a game or performance? Do you eat vegtables? Go to the gym? Meditate? These acts seem so small, but done over time your children will either mimic or become completely disgusted with your behavior.

Teens have mentioned to me how rude and offensive their parents can be towards their friends, coaches, teachers and other parents. Little children have given me big hugs because their parents always greet friends with hugs. It’s amazing how much influence parents have on their children. Now you know, so mind your manners and have compassion for others. Your children will thank you and so will society.
